I've got a spyder 2 express monitor calibration device, but I'd like to profile my printer as well.

Can anyone recommend a device that does reasonable print calibration as well?

How about the Color Munki? I just ordered one for my wife, but have not had a chance to try it yet. It is supposed to be able to calibrate both the monitor and the printer.

To be honest with you, I don't really think there's a general option for that. Heck, I can't easily find one that is dedicated to just printing! The problem with your request is that monitors are RGB and printers (at least good photographic ones) are CMYK. The first is additive, the second is subtractive. So, the models are so different that it would be unlikely that a single device would cover both.

Now, what I have managed to glean about the whole thing is that printer calibration is generally quite good and is subject to using the correct drivers and profiles. The reason for calibrating the monitor is to ensure what you see on screen is what comes out on the printer. So, best bet is to compare the final output on the printer to your screen. Correctly calibrated, they should be a match or very darn close.

On another note, how do you like the Spyder? I have the Pantone Huey Pro and it seems pretty good. At first it seemed that the colour was actually wrong, but I eventually realized that I was simply used to staring at the wrong colours!

I've found the Spyder to be good for a basic device. I use linux and was quite pleased with the usability of non-proprietary software that is now available that works with it. The only feature it lacks is a way of magically redoing the calibration regularly so I don't have to remember. :p – Roger Dec 21 at 21:54
